An excellent group of six prehistoric bone tools and implements originating from the Santa Fe River, Florida, USA, crafted during the Middle Archaic period, c. 5000-4500 BC.

Submerged in low-oxygen, anaerobic river silt for millennia, these bone tools absorbed natural iron and tannins from the water, undergoing a slow mineralization process that preserved them in near-perfect condition for over 6,500 years.

The group breaks down into two distinct functional categories: The three shorter pointed elements represent hunting and fishing technology. Rather than standalone tools, these were designed to be hafted directly into split reed shafts or bound to wooden frameworks as side-barbs for composite fish hooks and leister fishing darts. (Please see image 3)

The three larger finely tapered, triangular shaped splinters in the group functioned as perforating awls and hide punches. These three tools were essential for garment fabrication, processing cordage, or initiating structural splits in tight basketry weaving. (Please see image 4)
