This extraordinary Hadrosaurid dinosaur egg, belonging to the oogenus Dendroolithus, carries a rare and evocative feature: a dramatic “hatching gap” which gives the impression a young dinosaur just poked out for the first time. This piece tells a story, perfectly imperfect. Whether the opening formed through ancient geological processes or mirrors the original emergence of a tiny Cretaceous hatchling, the effect is undeniably powerful—inviting you to picture the moment life once stirred within this shell.
Unearthed from the fossil-rich Xixia Basin of Henan Province, this substantial specimen represents one of the most iconic egg types associated with hadrosaurids, the gentle, duck-billed herbivores that roamed Late Cretaceous floodplains. The egg retains extensive patches of original eggshell, displaying the characteristic grey-to-black pigmentation and beautifully preserved surface texture unique to Dendroolithus eggs.
Set in its natural brick-red sandstone matrix, this piece captures a silent prehistoric drama. The opening along the shell creates a visceral sense of movement—a frozen moment where Earth’s deep past meets imagination and discovery. It is both scientifically significant and aesthetically compelling, making it an ideal centerpiece for any fossil collection.
Dimensions: Approx. 14 cm (L) x 11.5 cm (W)

Condition: Good overall preservation for the specimens size, with substantial original eggshell remaining in clear detail and lots more still underneath the brick red matrix- giving great natural character. The natural open gap provides a rare visual highlight.
The specimen has undergone some careful consolidation and preparation for optimal display. The egg was found in three large pieces, which is typical for specimens of this formation. It has been professionally reassembled and consolidated for stability and display, using museum-standard adhesives. The join lines are clean and unobtrusive- however this has still been reflected in the price.
