This substantial Ice Age fossil is a majority lower jaw of the Woolly Rhinoceros (Coelodonta antiquitatis), a prominent Pleistocene megafauna species that roamed the cold steppe-tundra landscapes of Europe. The specimen originates from Ice-Age gravel deposits in Darmstadt, Germany, an area known for scarce yet well-preserved Pleistocene fossils. Estimated to be around 150,000 years old, the jaw preserves three intact large rooted molars and one partial yet rooted molar, each maintaining their original positions.

The specimen exhibits a rich, natural patina, with subtle variations of earthy tan and caramel tones, reflecting mineralization over tens of millennia.
The jaw preserves the posterior molars of the lower dentition, with M1–M3 fully intact and a partial M4 at the back. The enamelled surfaces of the preserved teeth exhibit a dark patina, highlighting their natural mineralization and clearly showcasing the original tooth structure.

Overall the bone surface is exquisitely preserved, with small areas of natural wear that underscore its authenticity and enhance visual impact. A small natural window has eroded into the front end of the jaw bone, revealing the roots of M1 in cross section, offering a rare view of the tooth in situ and making this specimen particularly interesting for anatomical study.

The jaw’s overall size and weight make it a significant piece for display, study, or museum-style presentation.

Origin Information:

Recovered from Pleistocene gravel deposits near Darmstadt, Germany, a region that supported a diverse assemblage of Ice Age megafauna, including woolly rhinoceroses, mammoths, and bison. Fossils from this area are relatively rare, and preservation of multiple teeth in situ is uncommon, adding both scientific and collector value.
