A display set consisting of genuine Mammuthus primigenius (Woolly Mammoth) hair, sourced responsibly from Taimyr, Siberia.

Hair can only be preserved due to the stable, low-temperature conditions provided by permafrost. Soft tissues such as hair and other organic body parts are typically recovered only from permafrost or anoxic deposits, where environmental conditions inhibit microbial activity and significantly slow or prevent decomposition.

Scientists study mammoth hair to gain insights into the species’ diet, migration patterns, seasonal behaviours, and even genetics, making it a valuable resource for both palaeontology and archaeology.

Mammoth hair has been successfully used by scientists to extract ancient DNA and proteins, helping research their relationship to modern elephants and other extinct species.
