Ancient Egyptian Mummy Wrappings, one with hieratic inscriptions, with Early 20th-Century Museum Label and Glass Display - Ex Aberdeen Anthropology Museum (Former Grant Bey Coll.)

Two Sections of Ancient Egyptian funerary textiles accompanied by their original early 20th-century museum glass display and label. The section to the left of the display is described as fine linen mummy cloth with hieratic inscriptions, whilst the second specimen to the right is labelled fine linen mummy wrappings.  

Both examples display evidence of staining, consistent with a combination of ancient embalming substances such as resins and oils used in the mummification process, together with the effects of long-term burial within the dry desert sands of Egypt.

These funerary textiles were most likely acquired and sent to Aberdeen University in 1873 by Scottish Surgeon and Egyptologist Grant Bey, whilst he was living in Cairo, as part of a large collection of Egyptian antiquities. 
The Aberdeen University Collection would later form part of the Anthropology Museum. 

The specimens are believed to be referenced on page 89 of the Aberdeen Anthropology Museum Illustrated Catalogue, published in 1912: 

Items No. 124/125: “Mummy linen…with hieratic inscriptions - Grant Bey collection”, refer to specimen A in the display.
No. 127: “Mummy wrapping in linen - Grant Bey Collection”, also on page 89, likely correlates to B. 

The surviving hieratic inscriptions present on specimen A are now faded and appear fragmentary, with only portions remaining visible upon magnification. The condition is consistent with the considerable age of the textile and its long history of burial, preservation, and museum display.

The specimens are encased within two pieces of clear glass, to avoid any confusion please note the piece has been photographed with a sheet of white A4 paper behind it, the display does not have a coloured backing attached.
