Edit: Sold.
This extraordinary Ice Age bone, likely a partial femur, derives from a juvenile Mammuthus primigenius, the iconic woolly mammoth of the Late Pleistocene.
The specimen originates from Doggerland, the now-submerged landmass that once connected Britain to continental Europe, which now lies beneath the North Sea, providing a rare window into Ice Age megafauna and their paleoecology.
Estimated to be around 20,000 years old and preserved with its natural curvature intact, this fossil leg bone exhibits robust cortical bone structure and well-defined morphology, albeit sea worn, reflecting the biomechanical adaptations of a juvenile mammoth.
The bone exhibits a rich, natural patina, with subtle variations in ochre, tan, and creamy ivory tones that reflect its long burial and mineralization beneath the North Sea. Its rough, sea-worn surface bears the marks of centuries spent in marine sediments, with gentle abrasions and textured ridges that, in our opinion, enhance its authenticity and visual appeal.
Origin Information:
The Brown Bank, beneath the North Sea off Lowestoft, England, is part of the ancient, now-submerged landmass known as Doggerland, which once connected Britain to continental Europe.
This hidden region supported a rich diversity of Pleistocene megafauna, including woolly mammoths, steppe bison, and other Ice Age giants. Fossils recovered here are comparatively rare, as the deposits are often deeply buried, eroded, or dispersed by marine activity.
Dredging from this site situates the specimen within a significant Pleistocene context, highlighting its scientific and educational value.
Specimen Details:
- Species: Mammuthus primigenius (Woolly Mammoth)
- Element: Large Bone- likely Partial femur (juvenile)
- Dimensions: L39 cm x 9cm (joint end) x 6cm (midshaft)
- Morphology: Slight natural curvature, robust cortical bone
- Age: Circa 20,000 years (Late Pleistocene)
- Provenance: Brown Bank, North Sea bed, off Lowestoft, England
- Paleoenvironment: Doggerland, submersion beneath the North Sea
This specimen offers a direct anatomical and paleoecological link to the Late Pleistocene megafauna of Britain and Northern Europe, and is suitable for scientific study, museum display, or distinguished private collections.
Please note: Every effort is made to photograph specimens in natural light for accurate representation. However, variations in-screen settings may cause very slight differences in colour appearance.
